Eating Disorders

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Every 62 minutes at least one person dies as a direct result from an eating disorder.

Eating disorders impact individuals of all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and body weights. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, researchers are finding that eating disorders are caused by a complex interaction of genetic, biological, behavioral, psychological, and social factors.

Understanding the signs and symptoms of eating disorders and how to help someone struggling with an eating disorder can truly save a life.

Objectives:

1. Identify and understand 5 main eating disorder diagnoses and 3 alternative presentations of eating disorders

2. Understand the Healthy at Every Size perspective to care

3. Identify potential functions of an eating disorder

4. Utilize brief assessment tool to determine the potential for an eating disorder for clients

About the Speaker

Brooke Farrington MSW, LCSW, CEDS-S is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist-Supervisor in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Farrington Specialty Centers, specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, compulsive exercise, and body image issues for all genders of all ages. Farrington Specialty Counseling has offered outpatient, group, and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care since 2009. Neossia is a PHP (Day Treatment Program) that opened in 2019. Prior to opening her practice, Brooke worked at an eating disorder facility where she directed the outpatient and intensive outpatient programs and led dance and movement groups in the residential program. She speaks frequently as an eating disorder expert in Northeastern Indiana and nationally. As well as being a therapist, Brooke also teaches dance. She is a professional member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp), the Academy of Eating Disorders (AED), and the Eating Disorder Task Force of Indiana. She is chair of iaedp’s Connection, Outreach, and Mentoring Committee and an iaedp Approved Supervisor. She was awarded iaedp’s Member of the Year in 2016.
